Die Finnen von Kalmankantaja starteten Anfang dieses Jahrzehnts mit depressivem Black Metal, sind aber mittlerweile eher im atmosphärischen Sektor unterwegs, auch wenn ihre Musik immer noch Züge der depressiven Schiene zeigt. Die Mannen sind sehr produktiv, so erschienen im Jahr 2014 neben einer Split vier ganze Studioalben, und auch dieses Jahr gibt es neben diesem Album, welches schon im Januar 2016 geschrieben und aufgenommen wurde, bereits zwei Compilations, eine Demo und eine Split mit der deutschen Band Gratzug! Dabei bestehen Kalmankantaja aktuell nur aus zwei Mannen: Tyrant am Mikrofon und Grim666 an allen Instrumenten!
Trotz der spartanischen, aus ganzen drei Stücken bestehenden Trackliste, wobei das in der Mitte, zwischen den beiden überlangen Songs platzierte Stück nur ein fast 3-minütiges Instrumental ist, kommt Album Nummer 10 auf eine Spielzeit von guten 35 Minuten. Damit hat man es meiner Meinung nach aber recht gut gelöst, denn wenn man die Laufzeit der CD ausgereizt hätte, wäre die Stimmung eventuell zum Ende hin gekippt. So jedoch kann man sich in der Laufzeit gänzlich fallen lassen und der Mischung aus Depression und aufbauender Atmosphäre lauschen.
Das einzige, was hier an Geschwindigkeit grenzt, ist die, in der Hinsicht auf das Tempo recht moderat eingesetzte Doppelfußmaschine. Ansonsten hält man sich mit den restlichen Instrumenten im langsamen Abteil auf. Die Gitarren sind zusätzlich mit einer guten Prise Hall belegt worden, was bei der Geschwindigkeit und dem nicht zu auffälligen Einsatz eines Keyboards eine dichte, träumerische Atmosphäre erzeugt.
Der Sound ist recht matschig, was der Atmosphäre aber zusätzlichen Aufwind gibt. Das Schlagzeug ist eher unkonventionell, recht hintergründig abgemischt. Der Gesang, welcher zwischen oftmals langgezogenem Krächzen und sauberem Gesang pendelt, steht nicht soweit im Vordergrund (wie man es von dieser Musikart sonst gewohnt ist) und ist ebenfalls mit einer Prise Hall gewürzt. Hier machen der Druckteppich der Bassdrum, die Gitarrenmelodien und das Keyboard den Hauptteil aus. Eine für mich eher unbekannte Herangehensweise, aber genau deswegen gefällt mir „Demonwoods“ auch so gut. Was hier auch viel ausmacht, ist der Umstand, dass man den Hörer in den Songlängen von über 15 bzw. 17 Minuten weder mit übertriebener Monotonie noch mit ständig neuen Parts belästigt. Für meinen Geschmack hat man hier genau die richtigen Mittel gewählt, um eine kühle Stimmung zu erzeugen, die den Hörer trotzdem in ihren Bann zieht!
The Finnish guys of Kalmankantaja started around 2010 with depressive black metal, but in the meantime they are more into atmospheric black metal with a touch of depression. They’re very busy – in 2014 they put out one split and four full-length albums and even this year they made „Demonwoods“, a compilation and a split with the German black metal band Gratzug. And though Kalmankantaja are current just two guys: Tyrant on vocals and Grim666 on all instruments.
In spite of the very little tracklist of three songs in its entirety and an instrumental 3-minute-track in the middle of two overlong songs, the 10th album comes along with a total playing time of over 35 minutes. In my opinion this is a good solution, because if the playing time would have been to the limit, the mood may has turned in the end. In this way you can let yourself completely fall and listen to a blend of depressive and constructive atmosphere.
The only thing bordering on speed is the moderate doublekick. Other instruments are more the slower way. The guitars are somewhat echoing, what creates a denser and dreamy atmosphere in combination with the moderate keyboards and the speed within the songs.
The sound is rather „muddy“, what adds even more atmosphere. The drums are unconventional profound and the vocals, that are echoing too, are a mixture of long carks and clean singing. The full pressured bassdrum, the melodic guitars and the keyboard are building the main part. An unknown approach for me, but that’s why „Demonwoods“ catches me. What also matters a lot is the fact, that the listeners in the 15 and 17 minutes songs isn’t bothered neither with exaggerated monotony nor with constantly new parts. For my taste they did just the right thing to create a chilly atmosphere and catches the listener.
